ON DUTY CITIZEN
KATE SOMERS
1) What are some “big kid” activities you love to do that keeps you youthful?
The number one ‘big kid’ activity that keeps me youthful is walking my family dog – there’s nothing like a goofy golden retriever to put a smile on your face! I’m also a huge fan of summer picnics – sitting outside in the sunshine with red checkered blankets and laughter, maybe a spontaneous game of Frisbee...I think it’s a summer routine I’ll return to, no matter my age. -I just did this last weekend with my friends and it honestly was the best day.. running around in the sun tossing the frisbee, eating some food and enjoying the weather. That's what summer is all about:)
2) Beyond modeling, what are some cool projects, hobbies or side hustles you’re working on?
I am currently working towards my law degree – I’ve just finished my first year and am in Paris for the summer learning about civil law. It’s been fascinating to compare different legal systems – observing differences and noting similarities is always a great way to question what we are accustomed to!
Studying law has been a fantastic experience so far, and I’m grateful that my agencies have been supportive in helping me balance studies with modeling work. I have met some truly inspiring people in the fashion industry, and I adore my colleagues at school – it’s so enriching to have a variety of different perspectives and ideas. I often feel that the balance of modeling and law school helps me better appreciate both – and it’s fun to have a bit of a double life! -I'm in awe you're able to do both, how inspiring! Good luck with the rest of your studies... you're an inspiration to all of us models that it is possible to balance work and school!
3) Part of what’s so great about being a model is having a following on social media. What are some important messages you try to pass on to your followers?
I mostly use social media when I am traveling, to try and capture little moments throughout the day that moved me or brought a smile to my face. If these photos communicate a message, I hope that it would be a sense of joie de vivre! It’s fun to look back at these images and recall the memories stored within each, and I like staying connected with friends and family while I’m abroad.
Although I’m not super active on social media, I have a great deal of respect for those who use it as a channel for relevant conversations on politics and wellness. Fellow Canadian @schillian does a great job capturing and communicating important ideas; @doingwell offers a beautifully curated approach to wellness reminders; and @nytarchives reminds us of the lessons from history we can turn to as we look ahead. These are just a few of my favorites, and I’m always looking for new suggestions.
4) You’re flying to a new city for a couple days of work. It’s a short trip- what are you packing?
For a couple days of work in a new city, I’m definitely packing some comfortable walking shoes and a notebook to record my thoughts in! My favorite way to explore a new city is to walk around without a map – and eventually end up in a little café to absorb everything I’ve taken in throughout the day. If I’ve got a second day to adventure, then I’ll pack a list of suggestions, gathered from friends who have visited before – notes on best places to listen to some local music, the best spot for a late afternoon glass of wine, the best museum to learn a little bit about where it is that I’ve been walking… -I couldn't agree more... I love going for a run or walk without a map, getting a bit lost and exploring the unassuming parts of a city. It's the best way to explore!
5) The fashion industry is quite wasteful, yet some companies and brands are trying to make a difference. Whether it’s a clean beauty brand or an ethical/sustainable company, do you have any favorites that stick out?
A couple of years ago, I shot a lookbook for Behno and fell in love with their clothing and accessories – it was amazing to learn about the ethos behind the brand, and the way that founder Shuvam Punjya places sustainability and ethical responsibility at the forefront of developing a beautiful collection.
More recently, I was lucky to come across the ethical and natural brand Zhini Shakh while shooting in Paris. The craftsmanship and care that goes into each piece is something special - artwork, fashion, and sustainability, all in one. I'm looking forward to following them on instagram (@zhinishakh) to see what comes next!
6) What are some of your go-to self-care rituals?
Number one for me is taking some time to relax and enjoy some alone time when that’s what my mind and heart are calling for. Remembering to respect what it is that we truly need at the end of a busy week of work or studies is so good for the soul. Additionally, I keep my energy levels up by walking as often as I can and staying well-hydrated – and curling up in bed with a movie when that’s what feels right!
